How I Work
I have an integrative approach to counselling and psychotherapy. The foundation of my work is humanistic; I believe that you are the expert on yourself and that each client is unique. Therefore I will incorporate aspects of CBT and solution-focussed therapy into my work as necessary, whilst certain psychodynamic ideas around attachment and loss can be very helpful. I offer mindfulness to my clients, this is a NICE recommended intervention for anxiety and depression. Full and comprehensive training in EMDR means that I can offer this NICE approved intervention for trauma, phobias and other issues within a counselling relationship. The therapeutic relationship which is developed between us underpins the success of your counselling; I believe that our relationship is central to the work that we will do together.
Sometimes the issues that a client brings are suitable for short term work; I know that significant change and resolution can occur in 5 or 6 sessions. Alternatively longer term work may be more appropriate, particularly when a client wishes to explore and resolve deeper seated issues which may have their roots in childhood experiences.
Our first meeting will be an opportunity for you to decide whether I am the right counsellor to help you. We will be able to discuss how I work and what your expectations of your counselling are. I will be interested in finding out a bit about you. Should you decide that you wish to engage in counselling with me, we will then arrange a series of further meetings; usually an initial contract of 5 sessions is agreed with a review at the end of this period.
Throughout our time together we will periodically check that your counselling is still meeting your needs; I believe that it is important that we retain a focus for our work. Of course, you are free to end your counselling whenever you wish; I believe that ending the work well is important and will usually suggest that we dedicate one session for that purpose.
